Introduction

Since its creation in 2009, Marginalia+Lab has been actuating as a space of meetings and exchanges to encourage the intersection and the contamination between different fields and disciplines. Assuming its potential of opening to the heterogenesis, by inviting several creation practices that propose to deconstruct the modern paradigms of specialization and production, the Lab opens the International Call for its Artistic Residency Program taking place between June and November 2012.

There will be four proponents - professionals, amateurs and enthusiasts from several fields – selected by a committee trough the analysis of their proposal and trajectory of research and creation.  The residents will develop, during the period of two months,  new, diverse, unusual, simple or complex proposals related to the ways in which, today, art, science and technology are and can be interconnected.

Besides the selection of residents, this call is understood as a mapping tool of contemporary creative practices, enabling Marginalia + Lab to be opened to local and global research demands in arts, technology, techniques, concepts, which intend to discuss, create and recreate the society that we live in and the logics that underlie it.

Marginalia+Lab

Acting since 2009, Marginalia+Lab is configured as a space opened to experimentation, research and collaboration in creative contemporary practices. The Lab develops residences, workshops, surveys, expositions, publications, meetings, and has already supported the development of several artistic projects. In 2010, it received the first Brazilian edition of the Interactivos?, an international event conceived by Medialab-Prado, from Spain. The project, through the State’s Cultural policies, comprises the program of cultural projects financed by the private company Vivo, along with other initiatives, like the digital art and music festivals Arte.mov and Eletronika.

Marginalia + Lab maintains in Belo Horizonte, a private space to conduct its activities. The Lab has an area of approximately 120 square meters. It can accommodate several activities and is opened to reconfiguration.

Its structure consists of a gallery, a hard lab, a library, a work area and storeroom containing computers, projectors, electronic and electrical equipment and tools. Among the lab`s fixed working team, there is a professional technical core able to provide support to their activities.

The developed proposals during the residency program will be documented and disseminated through the website and through several communication actions of the Marginalia +Lab.

Proponents

The call for the Artistic Residency Program of Marginalia + Lab in 2012 is targeted at professionals from different fields and backgrounds, whose are interested in developing creative, experimental and research proposals on the intersection between art, science and technology.
It is interest of Marginalia + Lab to encourage the work of a variety of people, not being required a prior activity in the art field.

Thus, the Lab aims to promote the free crossing between areas of knowledge in multi, trans, inter -disciplinary and mediatic practices carried out by amateurs or professionals in an environment that derives its philosophy (broad, open and inclusive) of notions related to sharing and documentation of processes, products and knowledge.

Proposals

Marginalia+Lab  supports and encourage the development of projects and surveys situated in the dilution of boundaries between the human, exact and biological sciences. It is expected that proposals are detached from traditional contexts of development in art, science and technology when understood as segregated areas.

Encouraging the procedural nature of collaborative research and the homemade practices related to the do-it-yourself, do-it-with-others cultures, the “high end low tech”, the “gambiarra”, it is expected, by this call, to bring on an open dialogue between areas of a current counterculture that yearns for the knowledge distribution through practices that are opened to appropriation and diffusion.

Therefore, this call seeks to encourage proposals that cause tension into the ownership models of producing art, technology and of thinking the knowledge. Prototyping, utopian and impossible projects are equally relevant. Nevertheless, these issues are not restrictive. Those interested in applying are encouraged to propose their own field perspective.

Art, Science and Technology

Moving from the recognition of art as a constantly changing field, the search for its definition in absolute terms seems not very fruitful, and it should not be exclusively dominated by artists with specific background and by consolidated institutions based on historical and market logics.

Science, in turn, should not be perceived as a field to be dominated exclusively by scientists and highly specialized laboratories and technicians supported by ostensible investment systems.

Therefore, in this residency program, the paradigm of definition is replaced by that of proposition, plural propositions, heterogeneous, concerned about exploring the relationships between these fields and tensioning established systems.

Mappping

Carrying a recent history, initiated decades ago, the media labs still seek to understand their potential roles in today's society and in the construction of the future.

Marginalia+Lab, through mapping and studying the proposals submitted to this call, seeks to understand the context of local and global demands of contemporary creative practices.

Therefore, the call for Marginalia+Lab Residency Program becomes a tool for the Lab`s updating, allowing the research of its own functions, possible occupation of its space and constant revision of its model.
